Report on the preliminary results of „Proyecto Ognorhynchus“ for the conservation of the
Yellow-eared Parrot Ognorhynchus icterotis in Colombia
Erste Ergebnisse des „Proyecto Ognorhynchus“ zum Schutz
des Gelbohrsittichs Ognorhynchus icterotis in Kolumbien
After the sighting of a flock of Yellow-eared Parrots along the Central Cordillera in Colombia in October 1997 a field research project „Proyecto Ognorhynchus” was started in June 1998 with the aim to relocate, research and protect this highly endangered parrot species. In the initial phase of the project no nesting record was possible, whereas another threatened species, the Golden-plumed Parakeet
Leptosittaca branickii was found nesting in groups of dead Wax Palms
Ceroxylon quindiuense, the same types of trees that could potentially be used by
O. icterotis for nest sites. An additional environmental education program for the local campesino population was
generated.

Information and Ignorance Concerning
the World’s Parrots: an Index for Twenty-first Century Research and
Conservation
Der Kenntnisstand über die Papageien der Welt: Ein
Index für Forschung und Artenschutz im 21. Jahrhundert
Each psittaciform in Handbook of birds of the world
(1997) was scored for (1) number of cited publications given, (2) number
of cited publications dedicated to that species in the wild, (3) range
data quality, (4) food data quality, (5) breeding data quality, (6),
"total" data quality (3-5 summed), (7) body weight, (8)
geographic region, (9) IUCN threat status, and (10) CITES Appendix
status. Most species scored 10-50 cited publications, but only 37 % have
one or more dedicated publications (100 % in shorebirds). High citation
rates correlate with large range, high abundance, great popularity or
critical endangerment; low rates correlate with presence on remote
islands. Data quality declines from range (for which two-thirds of
species are well known) through food (for which two-thirds of species
are poorly known) to breeding (for which three-quarters of species are
poorly known). Species in Australia and New Zealand are best known;
those in the Oriental region, Papuasia and the Pacific the worst. The
Oriental region has the highest rate of endangerment, followed by the
Neotropics and Australia/New Zealand. Large species are better known
than small ones, and (because of trade, limited nest-site availability,
scale-dependent habitat fragmentation and low reproductive output) are
three times more likely to be threatened than small ones; but threatened
and/or CITES I parrots are only slightly better known than non
threatened and/or CITES II species. The species-rich genera most in need
of data are Chalcopsitta, Eos, Lorius, Charmosyna, Micropsitta,
Prioniturus, Loriculus, Pyrrhura, Brotogeris, Touit, Pionopsitta,
Hapalopsittaca and Pionus.

Statistische Erhebungen zu Auftreten von
Verhaltensstörungen bei Großpapageien in Menschenobhut (2. Teil)
Behavioural disorders of large parrots (part II)
Parrot Biology Heft 1/1998 erschienen.

of Blue-fronted Amazons Amazona aestiva kept in an aviary
We studied the food habits of the Cuban parrot Amazona
leucocephala in Los Indios Ecological Reserve in western Isla de la
Juventud, Cuba, 9–31 May 1996. Feeding observations were made along 2
km-long transects, one each in semi-deciduous gallery forest and
pine-barren habitat dominated by pine and palms. A total of 39 species
were observed used by feeding parrots, with guara Cupania cubensis,
yamagua Guarea trichilioides, malagueta Xylopia aromatica,
macurije Matayba oppositifolia, mango Mangifera indica,
and yagruma Cecropia peltata being the most important food plants
in gallery forest, and pino macho Pinus caribaea, peralejo de
pinar Byrosonima wrightiana, palma barrigona Colpothrinax
wrightii, cordobán Miconia androsaemifolia, and Lyonia
vaccinioides in pine-barren habitat. In addition to those plants
observed fed upon by parrots, we found 17 other species within the study
area with characteristics that suggest that they would be appropriate
food for the parrot. Among plant parts observed consumed, fruits were
the most common structures fed upon by parrots. Foraging flocks averaged
3.8 ± 2.5 (N = 48, range = 1–15 birds) parrots per group. The feeding
data are being used in the development of a management plan for the Los
Indios parrot population.

Famous ornithologists (part 5): Erwin Stresemann (1889-1972)
– scientist, teacher, organizer
